The Goonies

Searching for One-Eyed Willy's treasure in "The Goonies" (1985)Warner Bros.

Long before the kids from "Stranger Things" were tearing across Hawkins, Indiana on their bikes, the Goonies were on the hunt for One-Eyed Willy's treasure.

On Saturday night, the gang is putting the '80s band back together for a "Goonies" reunion that promises a live virtual script reading.

You know what that means — the Truffle Shuffle.

Cast members Sean Astin (Mikey), Corey Feldman (Mouth), Josh Brolin (Brand), Martha Plimpton (Stef), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Ke Huy Quan (Data), Kerri Green (Andi), Cliffside Park and Hoboken's own Joe Pantoliano (Francis Fratelli) and Robert Davi (Jake Fratelli) will participate in the script reading.

"The Goonies" premiered in 1985. The bright-eyed tale of a group of young adventurers is enshrined in pop culture as a sacred artifact of carefree '80s summers. The film, embellished with secret caves and booby traps, is a love letter from a time before internet connections and social media tethered kids to computers and phones.

The reunion will have to supply new actors for some of the characters. John Matuszak, who played Sloth, died in 1989. Anne Ramsey, who played Mama Fratelli, died in 1988. Mary Ellen Trainor, who played Mikey and Brand's mother, died in 2015, and Keith Walker, who played their father, died in 1996.

When is the 'Goonies' reunion and script reading?

The virtual reunion is set for 8 p.m. ET Saturday, December 5.

Viewers are asked to make a donation to benefit No Kid Hungry, a campaign run by the nonprofit Share Our Strength that works to ensure kids get three meals a day. Need surged when schools closed because of COVID-19, keeping children home and away from free school breakfasts and lunches.

This will be the second "Goonies" reunion of the pandemic. The cast previously gathered in April with director Richard Donner and writers Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg (who produced the movie with Donner) for a "Reunited Apart" reunion hosted by Josh Gad benefitting the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.

What happened to the 'Goonies' sequel?

What happened to the talk of "The Goonies 2″ that surfaced in 2014?

It's still talk — but maybe going somewhere this time (Goonies never say die!).

At the time, director Richard Donner said that Spielberg, who came up with the story for the first movie (Columbus wrote the screenplay), wanted to move forward with a sequel and had a viable idea for a new story.

Adam F. Goldberg, creator of "The Goldbergs," has been trying to make "The Goonies 2″ happen. In October, be tweeted concept art for a "Goonies" sequel script that he was writing. Goldberg said he was headed into a pitch meeting with Donner.

"Tried to wait out this damn pandemic to present Richard Donner THE GOONIES 2 in person," Goldberg tweeted in October. "But I caved and set a zoom for Fri. Never say die, people!"

Other TV and film reunions of the pandemic — and there have been many! — have included "The Princess Bride," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "The West Wing," "Happy Days," "Superbad," "Seinfeld" and "The Nanny."
